Underdog Fanzine: 01-2015

The breath of death blows from Basti’s mouth, a devastating primate greeting from the den of the starving beast that pounces on everything as soon as the gate opens. Death, devil and destruction. Prayers to heaven may promise relief, Gregorian chant may bring salvation, but in the end the call of the beast and the realization that you cannot escape it prevail.

Der Hauch des Todes weht aus Bastis Mund, ein vernichtender Primatengruß aus der Höhle der hungernden Bestie, die sich auf alles stürzt, sobald sich die Pforte öffnet. Tod, Teufel und Zerstörung. Da mögen Gebete gen Himmel Linderung versprechen, der gregorianische Choral Seelenheil bringen, aber am Ende überwiegt der Ruf der Bestie und die Erkenntnis, dass du ihr nicht entkommen kannst.

The violent nodding of heads, the stench of disharmony, chord slaughter, endless pain in an escalation loop provide a turbulent inferno of sound, where in the maelstrom of the sound apocalypse all participants move away from each other, but always audibly stay close. No pity, no mercy, no grin, no diversity. Just the need to feed the beast and hope the hunter doesn’t come.

Das heftige Kopfnicken, der Gestank von Disharmonie, Akkordgemetzel, unendlicher Schmerz in einer Eskalationsschleife sorgen für ein turbulentes Klanginferno, wo sich im Strudel der Klang-Apokalypse alle Beteiligten von einander entfernen, aber immer hörbar in der Nähe bleiben. Kein Mitleid, kein Erbarmen, kein Grinsen, keine Vielfalt. Nur das Bedürfnis, die Bestie zu füttern und hoffen, dass der Jäger nicht kommt.

DOCUMENT 6 is a combo from Aachen, Germany, which has been ranting a bit since 2012. In the same year the debut called “Das vierte Reich” came out, in 2013 a demo and to 31.12.2014 this EP. Meanwhile, they are only three and are looking for a new, second guitarist and a bassist. If you are interested, just write to the band. Only on the edge.
What awaits the inclined listener? 22 minutes properly what on the bell. The preference for grindcore and brutal death metal can be heard clearly. The self-production could have been a little better sound-wise. It’s just an own production. Hm, the drummer seems familiar and yes, it’s the old Kadath and Cause of Divorce drummer. I always liked Kadath, it’s good that they continue. One of them is playing with Spawn now. I’m digressing, let’s get back to DOCUMENT 6.
As I said, unfortunately the sound is not as penetrating as the music needs. They will certainly have to work on that a bit next time. Otherwise, the Death/Grind is quite fun, but without being completely convincing. The banging and banging in the form of grind and death riffs is quite good for me as a death grinder, especially since the double bass attacks leave a lot of blood and sweat. That there is a woman at the microphone, you can not guess at any time. Sounds like any other Death/Grind Combo, nice hateful and so it should be. The songs rumble a bit, but always have good moments in them. There are no real hits, but no bad stuff either. The structure of the songs is definitely interesting, because you go away from the 08/15 Grind and alternates between proper banging and dragging moments back and forth. Makes the album quite varied. With a statement at the beginning it goes off classically in the form of an intro and already the noise can begin. In the middle of the album my ears suddenly take monk choirs and bell choirs. Not exactly typical, but quite fitting and interesting. “Dead Kings” is the name of the corresponding song and goes off well. Interesting idea. Songs like the opener “Openmind” or “Atomic destruction” can convince me and make mood, of course brutal mood. The vocals could be a little more in the foreground, but I had already addressed that with the production. The band is very much on the road to bring you their sound closer. It’s worth it in any case, because you can hear the joy of playing at every corner and you notice that they want to know it again.

Bei DOCUMENT 6 handelt es sich um eine Combo aus Aachen, die seit 2012 ein wenig rumlärmt. Im selben Jahr kam gleich das Debut namens “Das vierte Reich” heraus, in 2013 ein Demo und zum 31.12.2014 diese EP. Mittlerweile sind sie nur noch zu dritt und suchen einen neuen, zweiten Gitarristen und einen Bassisten. Bei Interesse einfach die Band anschreiben. Nur am Rande.
Was erwartet den geneigten Zuhörer?. 22 Minuten ordentlich was auf die Glocke. Die Vorliebe zum Grindcore und brutalen Death Metal sind klar zu hören. Die Eigenproduktion hätte soundmäßig zwar ein wenig besser sein können. Ist halt ne Eigenproduktion. Hm, der Drummer kommt einen bekannt vor und yes, es ist der alte Kadath und Cause of Divorce Drummer. Kadath fand ich immer geil.Gut, dass die Burschen weitermachen. Einer von denen spielt jetzt ja bei Spawn. Ich schweife ab, kommen wir zurück zu DOCUMENT 6.
Wie gesagt, leider ist der Sound nicht so durchdringlich, wie es die Musik bräuchte. Daran muss man beim nächsten Mal sicherlich noch ein wenig arbeiten. Ansonsten macht der Death/Grind durchaus Laune, ohne aber komplett überzeugen zu können. Das Geknatter und Geballer in Form von grindigen und deathigen Riffs kommt bei mir als Deathgrinder ganz gut an, zumal die Doublebassattacken ordentlich Blut und Schweiß hinterlassen. Das dort eine Frau am Mikro steht, kann man zur keiner Zeit erahnen. Klingt wie bei jeder anderen Death/Grind Combo, schön haßerfüllt und so sollte es ja auch sein. Die Songs poltern ein wenig vor sich hin, haben aber immer gute Momente inne. Richtige Hits sind nicht dabei, aber auch keine schlechten Sachen. Der “Female Fronted political death/grind” hat noch Platz nach oben.Der Aufbau der Songs ist definitiv interessant, denn man geht vom 08/15 Grind weg und wechselt zwischen ordentlichen Geballer und schleppenden Momenten hin und her. Macht das Album recht abwechslungsreich. Mit einen Statement zu Beginn geht es klassisch in Form eines Intros los und schon kann der Krach beginnen. Mitten im Album nehmen meine Ohren auf einmal Mönchchöre und Glockenchöre war. Nicht gerade typisch, aber durchaus passend und interessant. “Dead Kings” heisst der entsprechende Song und geht gut ab. Interessante Idee. Songs wie der Opener “Openmind” oder “Atomic destruction” können mich überzeugen und machen Laune, natürlich brutale Laune. Der Gesang könnte ein wenig mehr in den Vordergrund gerückt werden, aber das mit der Produktion hatte ich schon angesprochen. Die Band ist sehr viel unterwegs, um euch deren Sound näher zu bringen. Es lohnt sich auf jedenfall, denn die Spielfreude hört man an jeder Ecke und man merkt, dass sie es nochmal wissen wollen.

Good Death/Grind with potential for development. I’ll definitely keep an eye on them and am currently annoyed that I couldn’t see them when they were in my hometown. I’m looking forward to the next full album. Hopefully then with a better production!

Guter Death/Grind mit Entwicklungspotential. Ich werde sie auf jeden Fall im Auge behalten und ärgere mich gerade, dass ich sie nicht sehen konnte, als sie in meiner Heimatstadt waren. Bin mal auf das nächste , volle Album gespannt. Hoffentlich dann mit einer besseren Produktion!

Small but nice – that’s how this EP by Document 6 from Aachen presents itself to me. The opener is classically introduced with a speech, whose origin is unfortunately unknown to me. Briefly summarized, it is about freedom, equality and justice and that these values have been lost. “We Have Lost The Way” is the final conclusion and already the acoustic carnage breaks loose. Straightforward, gruff riffs pair with double-bass thunderstorms and a rather restrained snare. The vocalist angrily expresses his resentment and makes it clear from the start that they are deadly serious. Fast and slow passages alternate. So it goes from infernal banging smoothly to dragging, lead-heavy death salvos.
They definitely try hard not to sound like any third-rate garage grindcore combo from next door and with the presented tracks they succeed quite well. The sound is not ordinary and I personally, as a not exactly die-hard grindcore fan, really like it.
But it is and remains grind. A music style that could hardly be more extreme and thus it should be clear that is not aimed at the general taste.
I was really surprised to find monk choruses and chimes in the track “Dead Kings” and even more surprised that it does not even bother and fits extremely well into the overall picture.

Klein aber fein – so stellt sich mir diese EP der Aachener Document 6 vor. Der Opener wird klassisch mit einer Rede eingeleitet, deren Herkunft mir leider nicht bekannt ist. Kurz zusammengefasst, geht es um Freiheit, Gleichheit und Gerechtigkeit und darum, dass diese Werte verlorengegangen sind. “We Have Lost The Way” lautet die finale Konklusion und schon bricht das akustische Gemetzel los. Geradlinige, schroffe Riffs paaren sich mit Double-Bass Gewittern und einer eher verhaltenen Snare. Der Vocalist bringt wütend seine Missgunst zum Ausdruck und macht von Vornherein klar, dass man es todernst meint. Schnelle und langsame Passagen geben sich im Wechsel die Klinke in die Hand. So geht es von infernalischem Geballer fließend zu schleppenden, bleischweren Todessalven über.
Man gibt sich auf jeden Fall Mühe, nicht wie jede drittklassige Garagen-Grindcore-Combo von nebenan zu klingen und mit den dargebotenen Tracks gelingt das auch ganz gut. Der Sound ist nicht alltäglich und gefällt auch mir persönlich, als nicht gerade eingefleischtem Grindcore-Fan, echt gut.
Aber es ist und bleibt nunmal Grind. Eine Musikrichtung, die extremer kaum sein könnte und somit sollte klar sein, dass nicht auf den allgemeinen Geschmack abgezielt wird.
Echt überrascht war ich, im Track “Dead Kings” Mönchs-Chöre und Glockenschläge wiederzufinden und noch viel überraschter war ich, dass es nicht einmal stört und sich extrem gut in das Gesamtbild einfügt.

In short, it can be said that it is quite fun to listen to this band and you realize that you are dealing with a young team that still really enjoys making music and is hungry for more.
Likewise, after listening to this disc, I am hungry for more and hope to hear more from Document 6 in the future.
What has to be said in conclusion is that, as is often the case in the genre, the vocals take a bit too much of a back seat, which is neither particularly bad nor particularly unusual given the high density of sound usually found in grindcore.
You should definitely listen to “Dead Kings”, “Atomic Destrucion” and the final track of the EP: “Kitty’s Girlfriend”.

Kurz zusammengefasst kann man sagen, dass es durchaus Spaß macht, dieser Band zuzuhören und man merkt, dass man es hier mit einer jungen Mannschaft zu tun hat, der es noch wirklich Spaß macht, Musik zu machen und die hungrig nach mehr ist.
Genauso bin ich nach dem Hören dieser Scheibe hungrig auf mehr und hoffe in Zukunft noch einiges von Document 6 hören zu dürfen.
Was man zum Schluss noch sagen muss, ist, dass wie oftmals in dem Genre, der Gesang ein wenig zu sehr in den Hintergrund rückt, was bei der hohen Klangdichte, die man im Grindcore üblicherweise findet, aber weder besonders schlimm, noch sonderlich ungewöhnlich ist.
Reinhören sollte man unbedingt in das eben angsprochene “Dead Kings”, “Atomic Destrucion” und das Schlussstück der EP: “Kitty’s Girlfriend”.
